Atherosclerosis: The early stage

  • The two pictures on the bottom left show the smooth inner lining of a normal coronary artery.
  • The two pictures on the right show deposits known as fatty streaks that are made up of fatty substances. They are only minimally raised and do not interfere with the flow of blood through the artery.
