What medications are prescribed after a heart attack?

  • Prior medications (if prescribed for diabetes, high blood pressure, lung disease, etc.) are usually continued
  • Aspirin
  • Nitroglycerin tablets for "PRN" or as needed use
  • A beta-blocker or ACE-inhibitor medication, depending upon how well the heart is pumping
  • Treatment for high cholesterol in patients with this problem
  • Smoking cessation
  • Dietary restrictions
  • Exercise program
  • Follow-up in physician's office
