How does the body respond to a Reduced Cardiac Output?

  • The heart can raise the cardiac output by increasing the vigor with which it empties. This raises the stroke volume.
  • It can also raise the cardiac output by increasing the heart rate, or by a combination of the increased heart rate and stroke volume.
  • The stroke volume and heart rate are increased by the stimulation of adrenaline which acts as the accelerator system for the heart.
