What happens when the heart is unable to further increase the cardiac output?
- When the failing heart cannot increase its output, the body develops a "ration" system
- Selective constriction or narrowing of the arteries allows less blood flow to skin and muscles while maintaining flow to vital organs like the brain
- Unfortunately, this puts an additional burden on the struggling heart by increasing resistance to emptying
