Carvedilol in Treatment of CHF

  • CHF causes the release of adrenaline-like or adrenergic chemical substances in our body. They try and increase the output of the heart by raising the heart rate and stimulating the heart to contract more vigorously.
  • Unfortunately, this is like "whipping" a sick and tired horse to go faster and pull harder. The horse will become sicker, stumble and perhaps die.
  • Drugs that block the effects of adrenergic agents protect the heart from this counterproductive "whipping."
