What are the causes of CHF?

  • Heart damage from coronary artery disease is the commonest cause and accounts for nearly two-thirds of all cases
  • High blood pressure in 4%
  • Toxic injury (alcohol, viral infection, etc.) in 2-4%
  • Heart valve diseases in 4%
  • Unknown causes make up 20% of the case
  • CHF may be related to pregnancy in rare cases
