What happens in the ER?
The initial evaluation and management of a patient with a heart attack usually consists of the following:
  • A history of the illness is obtained from the patient and a physical examination is performed
  • EKG is obtained
  • Drawing of blood for testing and placement of an IV
  • Pain medication, usually through the IV line
  • Aspirin
  • A chest x-ray
  • Nitroglycerin tablet, if needed
  • "Clot buster medication" versus angioplasty
